The textbook for this course, Cambridge Latin Course, is by far the most popular in the UK and is used by over 90% of schools teaching Latin. Students will need to purchase a copy of Book V but this will not be used until Session 9. You will be supplied with Powerpoints illustrating each of the Cambridge stages covered in Part IX. Session 1 6/1 Check translation of Euphrosynē I, read Euphrosynē II and cēna Hateriī. Deponent verbs (pg.64-5). Homework: Read philosophia, and prepare About the Language 2 (gerundives).and 3 (future participles).
Session 2 13/1 Comprehension questions (Latin and English) on philosophia. Gerundives and future participles. Practising the language (agreement of adjectives, subjunctive in reported commands)/ Homework: Read `Roman society’ and `Astrology, philosophy and other beliefs’ (pp.71-75). Prepare for vocab quiz on Stage 32..
Session 3 20/1 Vocab quiz on Stage 32. Powerpoint LATIN 33. Future tense (with LATIN VERBS.ppt). Read Tychicus and commence in aulā Domitiānī- I with Latin and English comprehension questions. Homework: Written answers to comprehension questions on page 83, prepare in aulā Domitiānī-II
Session 4 3/2 Correction of comprehension questions on in aulā Domitiānī-I Read in aulā Domitiānī-II. Exercises on future tense (pg.85). Homework: Prepare pp.85-88 (`About the language’, `Practising the language’) and for vocabulary. quiz on Stage 33
Session 5 10/2 Vocab quiz on Stage 33. Conversation (names, origin, place of residence, ages, family members). Exercises on diminutives and the future perfect tense (pp.86, 88). `Practising the language’. (perfect passive participles, passivization of sentences). Revision of all tenses (with LATIN VERBS). Session 7 24/2 Correction of translation of īnsidiae-I. Read īnsidiae-II and exitium-I Collection of orders for Book V. Homework: Prepare exitium-II and honōrēs.
Session 8 2/3 Read exitium-II and honōrēs. Exercises on present passive infinitive and future passive tense (pp.102 and 104). Revision of passive tenses. Homework: Prepare for quiz on Stage 34. Read `Freedmen’ (pp.106-109).
Session 9 9/3 Quiz on Stage 34 vocabulary. `Practising the language’ (p.104-5; future tense forms, sentence building, passivization) View LATIN 35. Homework: Revision of grammatical forms from `Language Information’.
Session 10 16/3 Overview of nouns, adjectives and verbs. Read ex urbe (in Stage 35 – Book 5) with comprehension questions in Latin and English. Homework (for those proceeding to LATIN X): Prepare vīta rūstica.
